Tom Clancy's EndWar Guide
Despite the far-reaching might of the USA's Joint Strike Force, there
are many who loathe it, including some of its supposed allies.
Determined to prove their worth, they'll do anything they can to tear
the United States from its throne, even if it means framing the world
powers and igniting World War III. That's the premise behind Tom
Clancy's EndWar, and we're going to help you brace yourself for its
fast-paced brand of RTS combat.
If you're starting out as a fresh-faced recruit, read the tips we've
written for rookies like you, and keep 'em in mind. That's not much
for us to ask of you, is it? After all, we're willing to work with you
through the entire "Prelude to War" scenario, which is seven
missions of rough-'n'-tumble battle prep. We bet you're getting
excited, but you shouldn't get ahead of yourselfÏvisit our Combat
Chain Expanded section before you enter combat. It'll tell you what
you can expect out of your units, what you shouldn't do with them,
and give you an even better idea of how to become an excellent
commander.

Tom Clancy's EndWar Basics
Tips for Rookies
If you want to stay in step with your compatriots, here's a few tips that'll help you get started.
Before all else, learn the "Combat Chain."
If you've ever played an RTS or an RPG, you're likely familiar with their
elemental rules (e.g., "water beats fire"). In the world of EndWar, their rules are as follows:
gunships beat tanks, tanks
beat transports, and transports beat gunships
. For example, if the enemy attacked you with tanks, you'd want to
attack their weakness by fighting back with gunships. If you sent transports out instead, your foes would overwhelm and
obliterate you, and that's why understanding this "Combat Chain" is so very important.
Second to that, you should familiarize yourself with the in-game controls.
Upon starting a new game, press pause
and visit your "Controls" menu. Therein, you'll see all of the functions which we refer to in this guide, including Primary
Action, Hot Swap, and Multiple Selection (Hold). Even if you're going to use your headset rather than your hands, there's
a fair chance you'll occasionally forget how to vocalize your orders. You should prepare yourself for that by memorizing
all of the necessary controller functions.

Prior to leaping into online play, trudge through the entirety of the "Prelude to War."
Fortunately, we're here to
guide you through all seven of its missions, and when you've beaten them, you'll be about ready to take on human
opponents. Although this RTS is simpler than many of its brethren, it's still an RTS, and you'll want to familiarize yourself
with its battle system ASAP.
Combat Chain Expanded
Now that you've memorized the Combat Chain, we can elaborate on the specific strengths and weaknesses of every
unit type. Beneath this list, we'll expand on what each unit does.

Artillery:
In layman's terms, these are portable cannons. They function best when they're very far away from their foe,
whom they don't need to see to shoot at. Their relatively weak constitution is compensated for by their excessively long
range. You won't be able to call on these during "Prelude to War," but you'll get the option almost immediately upon

starting "World War III."
Command:
Specifically, this is the "Command Vehicle." When you have one of these on the battlefield, you'll be able to
use the SitRep ("Situation Report"). This brings you out of third-person mode, and presents you with a map of the entire
battlefield. Unfortunately, you'll only be able to see enemies in the areas of friendly radar and line of sight, but this is still
an absolutely priceless function. You can wage an entire battle on the SitRep's map, and most of the time, you may want
to do just that. You'll have to wait until you've started the "World War III" campaign, however.
Engineers:
These on-foot soldiers are very skilled, but also very vulnerable until you've provided them with cover. If you
can order all of them to fill a building and fire upon enemy vehicles, you'll get to enjoy their surprisingly devastating
strength. They're also capable of claiming
and
upgrading Uplinks, unlike riflemen, who can only secure them.
Riflemen:
They're heartier than your other soldiers, and they're great at destroying enemy drones. Because they can
garrison buildings and crush the opposing forces' engineers, they're useful. Additionally, if you're in an area where there
aren't any structures and you're trying to decide which on-foot force to use, go with a riflemen unit. They can take cover
behind weaker protection and live longer than engineers, who are practically helpless without buildings to hole up in.
They're also a great go-to unit when you have to claim Uplinks.
Gunships:
These helicopters may be armed to the teeth, but if you throw them into the lion's den, you'll realize how
delicate they truly are. Transports will take them down in no time at all, but they'll really tear into tanks. If you need
supporting firepower, they can get to the scene faster than anything else, and you'll have a better chance of successfully
ordering their retreat if they're damaged.
Tanks:
Their name implies that they're unstoppable steel behemoths, but no one unit is the God of the battlefield, tanks
included. Their greatest weakness is gunships, and they're also surprisingly vulnerable to riflemen. Fortunately, they do
have strong shielding and a high amount of hit points, which makes them a fairly reliable vehicle choice.
Transports:
A soldier's best friend. The transport vehicles can pick up entire units of riflemen and engineers, and they'll
take them to any location you designate. That enables your soldiers to reach waypoints much faster than they would on
foot, but be forewarned: any damage a transport takes will be passed on to its occupants. If you run into tanks, you and
your living cargo will be in for a world of hurt.

we'll use the directions north, south, east and west. If you're in a mission and read reference to a particular direction,
look at your in-game map. The top is the north point, which means that the right side is east, the bottom is south, and
the left is west.
Good luck!

Prelude to War
Before your game begins, the
Voice Command Trainer
will instruct you on issuing commands to your teammates.
You shouldn't skip this, unless you aren't going to use a headset. It does have one bit of advice that proves useful
regardless, and that's this priceless line:
"who, what, and where."
It summarizes how you'll be issuing commands
in EndWar. To elaborate, you will need to select certain units (who), the task they're going to carry out (what), and
the location they'll do it at (where). Loading screens will remind you of this occasionally, so it's doubtful you'll forget
it.
Aside from introducing you to the story, the Prelude to War is essentially a lengthy tutorial. For instance, the
opening mission assigns you but one unit, while the second gives you two, and the third reveals the method for
summoning reinforcements. By the time you're done, you'll fully understand the setting of EndWar and will be ready
test your mettle in online play.
