A speaking lesson for Elementary Students

Aim
: An information gap speaking activity. Students complete a fact file on a famous person (David
Beckham) and then guess who it is.
Materials
: Make one copy of the worksheet for every pair of students. Cut it into 2 pieces A and B.
Preparation:
This activity works really well if you can find a picture of David Beckham. We are unable
to include one with this lesson, but here’s how you can get an image of David Beckham from the Internet:
1. Go to the website
and click on Google Images. This is a search engine for pictures
and images.
2. Type in “David Beckham”. You will get a choice of hundreds of images of the famous football (soccer)
player. Choose one that you like and click on it. You will be taken to the website where that picture
comes from.
3. Right-click on the picture and choose “Save Image as…”. Save the image on your disk.
4. You can now insert the image into a Microsoft Word file and make it bigger or smaller.
If you can find a picture of David Beckham, start with Stage One. Otherwise go straight to Stage Two.
Stage One
:
For this stage you need a big picture of David Beckham and several small post it notes.
Cover the picture with the post it notes. Stick the covered picture on the board. Tell the
students that it is a picture of a famous person. Take off one of the post it notes and ask
students to guess who it is. Continue this way, taking off post it notes little by little. Do
not tell them who it is, even if someone guesses. Stop taking off post it notes before it
becomes too obvious who the picture is of. Tell the students that they are going to find
out more about the famous person during the class.
Stage Two
:
Put students into pairs. Write on the board the following:

Elicit the question for each section. Drill these for pronunciation. Below are suggested
questions (for some sections you may wish to change the question, e.g.
What is his
height?
is easier than
How tall is he?
)

Answers:
What’s his name? Where is he from? Where was he born? When was he born? What colour is
his hair? What colour are his eyes? How tall is he? How much does he weigh? Who is in his family?
What is his wife’s name? Does he have any children? What does he do?
Stage Three
:
Nominate students A and B in each pair. Give each student A an A worksheet and each
student B a B worksheet. Tell them they must ask questions to find the missing
information on their worksheet. Explain that the first two sections are blank for
both
students. They must not show each other the worksheet while they are doing this! When
they are finished, they can check their answers with each other. Ask them if they can
complete the first two sections on their sheet and guess who the famous person is. When
all the students have finished, rub off the board and ask students to repeat some of the
more difficult questions from the activity. For every question they get right, remove
another post it note from the picture of David Beckham until they can see the whole
thing.
Stage Four-Extension
:
You can extend this activity in two ways.
1 Have you students complete a similar profile for each other using the blank form.
2 Give students each a copy of a blank form and ask them to make a profile of someone
they admire. They can research this on the internet for homework. They then bring their
completed profiles to class and explain them to the rest of the class.
